Alibaba has reportedly prohibited employees from using Anthropic's Claude Code, instructing engineering teams to switch to the company's in-house AI coding assistant, Qoder, as competition between Chinese and U.S. AI developers intensifies.
According to reports citing people familiar with the matter, the internal restriction follows growing concerns surrounding Claude Code's environment verification mechanisms and broader disputes over AI model access and intellectual property.
Internal Shift to Alibaba's AI Coding Platform
Claude Code has gained popularity among software developers for its ability to assist with programming, debugging and code generation.
Despite Anthropic restricting access to users and organizations in mainland China, many developers reportedly continued using the platform through alternative methods, including engineers working at Alibaba.
Under the new policy, employees are being directed to use Qoder, Alibaba's proprietary AI-powered coding platform, for software development tasks.
Environment Verification Raises Attention
The reported ban comes shortly after developers claimed Claude Code includes an environment verification mechanism that gathers technical information from users' systems.
According to public discussions, the feature can collect data such as:
- Time zone information
- Proxy server configuration
- Runtime environment details
The collected information is reportedly attached to requests sent to Anthropic's infrastructure.
Anthropic later confirmed that the mechanism was introduced as part of an experiment launched earlier this year.
According to a company employee, the feature was designed to detect unauthorized account resellers and reduce the risk of AI model distillation, where one large language model is used to train competing models.
Growing AI Competition
The latest development adds to a series of disputes between major American and Chinese AI companies.
Earlier, Anthropic accused Alibaba of improperly accessing Claude models in an effort to improve its own large language model development, allegations that underscore increasing competition over advanced AI technologies.
