Sony has announced that it will discontinue physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles released from January 2028, marking a major shift toward digital game distribution.
The company said games scheduled for release before January 2028 with planned physical editions will not be affected. However, all new PlayStation games launching after that date will be available exclusively through digital channels, including the PlayStation Store and authorized digital retailers.
Shift Toward Digital Distribution
Sony said the decision reflects changing purchasing habits among PlayStation users, with digital downloads becoming the preferred way for most customers to buy and play games.
According to the company, moving away from physical media will allow it to better align its distribution strategy with evolving consumer preferences.
Digital Sales Continue to Grow
The transition follows several years of steady growth in digital software sales across the PlayStation ecosystem.
In its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Sony reported that digital purchases accounted for 85% of PlayStation game software sales during the fourth quarter, highlighting the industry's continued shift away from physical media.
End of an Era for Physical Games
Physical game discs have long been a core part of the video game industry, offering players the ability to build collections, display boxed games, lend titles to friends, or retain permanent physical copies.
Beginning in 2028, however, new PlayStation releases will be distributed exclusively in digital format, reflecting Sony's broader strategy to support a fully digital gaming ecosystem while responding to changing consumer behavior.
