Seattle-based Overland AI has secured a US$19.7 million production contract from the U.S. Marine Corps to manufacture autonomous ground vehicles, becoming what the company says is the first dedicated ground autonomy developer to serve as the prime contractor for a military production program.
The agreement calls for the delivery of more than a dozen autonomous vehicles along with the software platform that enables self-driving operations in challenging battlefield environments.
Initial vehicle deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027.
Autonomous Vehicles for Military Logistics
The autonomous vehicles will support Marine Corps counter-drone operations by transporting supplies to air defense teams rather than replacing existing tactical vehicles.
According to the company, the systems are designed to improve logistics efficiency while reducing personnel exposure in high-risk operational environments.
The contract represents a significant milestone for Overland AI as it moves from research, demonstrations and prototype testing into full-scale defense manufacturing.
GPS-Free Autonomous Navigation
Overland AI specializes in autonomous driving systems capable of operating in complex off-road environments where satellite navigation is unavailable or unreliable.
Its autonomy software enables military vehicles to navigate rugged terrain using onboard sensors and artificial intelligence instead of relying solely on GPS.
The technology has been developed for missions including:
- Autonomous logistics
- Battlefield resupply
- Off-road navigation
- Military mobility in GPS-denied environments
Such capabilities are becoming increasingly important as armed forces prepare for operations in contested environments where electronic warfare may disrupt conventional navigation systems.
From University Research to Defense Production
Founded in 2022, Overland AI was spun out of the University of Washington by Chief Executive Officer Byron Boots and President Stephanie Bonk.
Boots is a professor specializing in machine learning and robotics at the university, where he leads research focused on autonomous systems.
Since its launch, the company has grown to more than 100 employees and raised over US$140 million in venture capital, including a US$100 million funding round earlier this year.
The company also opened a 22,000-square-foot production facility in Seattle to support manufacturing of autonomous defense systems.
Accelerating Military Deployment
The contract was awarded through the U.S. Department of Defense's Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technologies (APFIT) program, which is intended to speed the transition of emerging technologies from prototype development into operational military service.
Overland AI has previously collaborated with the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Special Operations Command and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on autonomous vehicle research and testing.
Growing Demand for Autonomous Military Systems
The award reflects increasing investment in autonomous ground systems as militaries seek to improve operational effectiveness while reducing risks to personnel.
Chief Executive Officer Byron Boots said interest from military users continues to grow as autonomous technologies become more relevant to modern battlefield operations.
The latest production contract positions Overland AI among a growing group of defense technology companies developing autonomous land vehicles capable of supporting logistics, reconnaissance and other missions in increasingly complex operational environments.
